Sasha (Family: Mommy - Brenda - Daddy - Richard, Charmaine and Jessica)
It was 1999. Her name was
Sasha. A girl had surrendered her to her mother as she was moving in
with a boyfriend and the place didn't allow pets. Sasha - 10 months
old - was beating up on the ladies' other 3 cats so it was a matter of
time before she would have been surrendered to the Humane Society - or
worse if this lady had no morals. My husband was a self-confessed cat
hater and had no pets growing up. He agreed to "go look at her" and
said she better have short hair. She was a ginormous 15 pound cat with
the longest hair I have ever seen on a feline. Oops. When my hubby
agreed to take her I couldn't believe mine and Sasha's fortune.

Our
girls, 11 and 7 at the time, were over the moon with joy and promised
their father they would share in the care of our new family member. As
usual, mom ended up with the lions' share of chores. Sasha spent most
of her time in the house. Whenever she went outside it was with
supervision in the backyard on her leash. She loved us unconditionally
and was our best friend. We could tell her all our problems and
secrets and we knew she understood. She taught us all a lot,
especially my husband, the now-former cat hater. She captured his
heart too. So much so that when he would come home from work, he said
hello to Sasha first.

She passed away peacefully surrounded
by her family on June 24, 2011. I loved her so much. I LOVE her so
much. I would not forego the 12 1/2 years of happiness she gave us for the
pain I feel now. To be afraid to love is to be afraid to live. I will
miss her always but I know her spirit is still here. Things happen in
the house with no explanation. There are some bonds that even death
cannot break.
